Here's a newer/bigger version of the black render I had up before...

I've never replaced a render with a different angle/style than it had before, so hopefully nobody's too pissed about it.

I apologize to anyone in advance if they fav'd the last version and don't like this one... plus I'll re-up the other one in my scrapbook if that happens.

If you do like it though, download for the full 2560x1600 version. :D

The model is done in 3DSMax and rendered using mentalray. There's only 2 lights in the scene - one photometric and one skylight for a filler. I wish I remembered to check the render time on this one before I closed it... my bad... it was rendered at 5000x2500 though, so it took a while...

As it stands - the body (only the body) has 21,112 polygons and it renders with 3x turbosmooth modifier. It'll do just fine with a 2x, but I like 3. :)

It'll be available on my site soon - I'm just in the process of mapping it now.

Amazing job. I love the stance, very mean! Am I wrong in thinking you had a Camaro rendered w/ HID projector's? I ~love~ those! I wanna get them on my Charger sooooo bad!

Thanks :)

You mean the halos? Yea the SS/RS package comes with 'em...
It's weird - the entry-level Camaro comes with the projectors/halos, then the SS comes with those lights you see here, but the SS with RS package comes with the halos again.
Oh it also comes with a red SS emblem as opposed to white... heh

I know tho right? I want 'em for the Charger too... but I keep hearing horror stories about the bulbs breaking and stuff...
Every time AAC has a group buy, I'm tempted.... arg!

I'll probably by the projectors that come w/ the halos already installed. They're on ebay. lol What's your opinion of the LED halos?

I just checked eBay to refresh my memory... the ones from Cosmo Dynamic are awesome, so yea fully get those lol. The chrome-backed ones would look good on your car. :)
Not a huge fan of the other designs... and supposedly they're not very bright at all.

I just updated the description with some details for ya.
But it's all modeled in 3dsmax, rendered with mentalray and edited slightly in Photoshop.

I think you gave me a good idea right now! thanks ;)

Yea everyone kinda gave up on MR by the look of it when vray surfaced...
It's good, but from my testing, there's some things vray can't do very easily.
With MR, it's just a matter of enabling like one option in the material... but with VR, you have to set up blend materials and all kinds of pain in the arse things.

It's awesome at hdri-lit scenes, but meh...

yeah you're right about that!

You have to tell me how you got that perfect render! I so love how the light is reflecting on the car!
are the materials downloaded or do you do them yourself?

I'd love to get renders like those! I bet the lightning setup isnt that are is it?

On this render? It's simple...

It's just a gradient ramp environment, skylight, and single photometric light.
Material settings is where it becomes a bit of a pain (I do all my own), but there's some good starters in the libraries that come with the program. Arch & Design mats are the best.

what is a gradient rampp environment? is that what you call a curved allround plane with a gradiant texture on it? if so, how you do the gradient?

I'm using vray, so using a skylight wont get good results I guess, and I havent heard of photometric lights yet...what is that?

about the materials, i do them myself too, just wanted to ask, because yours are really great! are you playing around with any other properties than diffuse, refract and reflect?

The easiest way to create a gradient ramp environment is to first open the Environment settings window, click the None button under Environment Map... choose Gradient Ramp. Then open the material browser and drag that to an empty sphere (I tend to use the far bottom-right one) and of course choose instance.

Then once you're in there. Change the mapping style from Texture to Environ, and change from Screen to Spherical. Next you'll have to rotate it cuz it wants to go horizontal by default. So set the W angle to 90. The other 2 Angle boxes can stay at 0.
Next you have to play with the ramp... create a horizon, and if you want - add some lights/lines to the area past 50%. Below 50% can be fully black if you want. Here's what my regular one looks like - [link]
I also brighten mine slightly by enabling the Color Map in the Output rollout and set the white point to 1.2 and black point to 0.1 (you can just increase the RGB Level, but I find this gives you more control).

Now if you use mr Photographic Exposure Control, you should change the Physical Sale to Unitless with a value of 20. You'll have to play with it to make it look proper. There are other ways to do that, but that's easiest.

I hope that helps. :D
And when you put a skylight in there, just set it to use the scene environment... 'course you could always create a seperate, less-complicated ramp for lighting too... but meh... gotta keep it easy. :)

As for materials, yea I play with everything...
As a matter of fact, I think most of my time is spent messing around with materials... I'm too picky sometimes.
Even my flat black is a blend between a matte material and a gloss one. Gotta have that tiny bit of shine in there.

I like the version of side mirrors that you used instead of the ones I've seen around the net. I haven't noticed any other changes. Care to tell?

:iconsmokingrafix:
SmokinGrafix Featured By Owner Jun 16, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
Yea the mirrors are way better than the concept.
Other than that, there's not really many changes.
Of course the whole SS nose is different...
The door/rocker panel lines are slightly diff and the rocker panel isn't part of the QP like before.
Headlights are different (and much better).
Side-signals are positioned different (and much wider).
Reverse lights were added to the rear.
Exhaust changed a lot.
Side inlets behind the door are closed off.
And the fuel door is moved to the passenger side (I liked the concept better).

Not a whole heck of a lot else... nothing big anyway. The grill changed a bit. Oh and of course the door handles, but the concept didn't even have handles... Just some stick-on things.
This here is the best site if you want to compare... GM's media page; [link] - GREAT for wallpapers. :D

Well yeah, besides the fact that yours actually looks better (the minor details help), knowing that you rendered it because you like it and you don't work for Chevrolet, you get cool points. They do it to see it or promote it.
